Thanks Kit, I found it in the end with the help of the National Maritime Museum. Named the Dominion Monarch it was the biggest passenger diesel liner and was requisitioned as a troop ship in WW2, escaped a Japanese fleet in Singapore by slipping past them out of the harbour, (no mean feat when you see the size of it) was a floating hotel at the World Trade Fair in Seattle and eventually was bought by a Japanese company and scrapped.
