SKY + HD

The man arrived at 8am this morning and changed my old sky plus box for a new HD sky plus box.
Whole process took only 10 minutes.
Never seen a chap work so fast.
Should I have the phone connected ...don't worry about it he says ...whoosh ...he was gone ...
I don't use the interactive services or box office so not an issue.

Anyway ...
The new box has a high frequency pitched whine to it.
Annoying to say the least.
If the TV is on ..then the volume kills the noise.
But if you want a silent room and the SKY HD is on standby and TV off ..the noise continues.

Anyone else have HD and this issue ?

no,that being said I am on my 3rd HD box!! I havent noticed any whining, mind you we are a fairly noisy household

It does make a whiny noise which I think is the hard drive booting up or updating? Sorry not very tech minded.
It doesn't do it all the time however, just every now and then. My PVR box does it too.

It's not the level of the noise ...just the pitch .....very high pitched ...like one of those anti cat or mice devices ....
At least it will keep the mice away ...lol

That's it ....boc has been installed since 8.15am ...calling sky

oh yes the hard drive does make a whirring sound when its quiet, would that be similar to what you are hearing?

I would think the noise you are hearing is the cooling Fan. Same as in a Computer.

FAO Betty baps. We had SKY for years without having the phone line too. We were never contacted!!
We changed to Virgin cable (phone, broadband and TV package) when SKY prices got ridiculous.

I trust that someone will correct me if I am wrong, but I think that you have to have your 'phone hooked up so that Sky can update stuff to the H/D box.

no ron, the updates come via the dish, the telephone is for the interactive services (competitions, games and box office ect)

Well like some strange person ...went into currys and comets today and put my ear to their SKY HD box , that were playing to demo TV. All of them were silent. Also listened to my brother in laws sky HD box and that was silent ...they all had a little sound including the hard disk clicking as it accesses .....

So logged a call with SKY and spoke to an Indian chap and they are quoting 5th of December to fix send someone out ....yes right ...had the box installed today and your saying you cant fix it till then ...anyway got my charges for sky suspended till they fix it ...and will call them back Monday and give them some heat and get it fixed sooner ....
