My favourite is from Threshers 6.99 and it is called "Las Colinas - a very nice (strong) wine ;o)
This is an impossible question to answer because who defines what is best? Why do youwant it? If it is for you to drink, then its a wine you'd like - so what types of wine do you like? If its for a present and you want to impress, then steer clear of brands and get something obscure, thus the recipient is not so likely to know its cost.

.

Some suggestions.South Africa and Australia make good wines at good prices , look for these from Tesco

  • Goats do Roam - about 5, excellent value matching Rhone wines at twice the price
  • Beyersklood Synergy - complex impressive blend for about 8
  • Diemersfontein Cape Diem Pinotage - stunning example of the variety for a tenner, winner of almost every tasting it's entered. Tesco bought the entire vintage at a good price which the winery regretted after the wine started winning all the plaudits.
  • St Hallett Faith Shiraz - a bargain at 6 from a leadind Oz exponent of this variety
Any cabernet Sauvignon from the vineyards of Paarl in South Africa is a very good bet! Or The Montana Merlot from NZ ( Safeway/asda 7.00)
No No....it has to be a nice little Chateauneuf du pape....most are expensive as tyou know but you can get some from Oddbinns for just under a tenner...just taste all that oak....mmmmm
A Faustino V (spanish) would be my choice.
Oh my God..who drinks Spanish stuff.....can't even call it wine....
Question Author
well i do actually. spain has some of the best wines going and my personal fav is a marques de caceres reserva but i'm trying to broaden my tastes. p.s. spanish wines like faustino and caceres are smooth, vanilla and oakey but i also like something a bit gutsy like a chateauneuf de pape. i don't like over sweet oz stuff. thanks, jim.
No, sorry , has to be French and that's that....
And if you think it has to be French then you are either a snob or a prat!
nuova1 is ignorant and clearly inexperienced in his/her understanding of wine. Anyone who thinks that only the French produce good wine does not know what they are talking about. A good Spanish Rioja is one of the finest drinking experiences there is. In terms of price a quality French wine is likely to be poorer value than a similar quality wine from almost any other country (although some of the Australian wines are also over priced).
Well I'm French so I should know what is good wine and what is not.....oh the snob/prat bit, probably both actuellment......
You can't go wrong with Australian red- it's gorgeous! One of my faves is Banrock Station- only about a fiver. Most Aussie reds are great though.
Try Cote A Cote Rouge, its cheap and cheery!
