Or it could be oil producing Islamic countries. Most countries were encouraged to democratised in the 20th century with the exception of the oil rich kingdoms. Maybe we were happy to keep the corrupt Kings in power for fear that a democratically elected Government might sell to the USSR instead. So they were encourage to stay undemocratic? Just a thought.
Britain extended voting to all adults in 1928, so that's how many thousand years... Why were western Christian regimes and democracy such reluctant bedfellows? Probably just because those in power like to hang on to it.
Iran was a democracy in the 1950s. The very popular democratically elected President and his governemt was overthrown by a CIA initiated coup at the behest of the British government and PM Winston Churchill. The British diplomats had already been expelled for organising a failed coup.
