3 lane Motorways?
Why do people weave in and out of trucks etc in the left hand lane rather than reducing lane changing and therefore increasing safety by staying in the middle lane?

I'm doing 80+.We all seem to agree that when the road is busy it's safer to stay in the middle rather than weave in and out of lane one. So given that is the case when lane 1/3 are empty and I'm n the middle doing 80+ how is that causing congestion? you can pass either side if you want to go faster.
After reading many answers & a lot a right about the return to the Inside after your maneuver, the obvious cause of the problems are the HGVs having been on them for years & the speed has been reduced to 56 & coming down to 50! thanks to the EU RsOLS, the congestion you will see then will be unreal to say the least, If you ever have the time on a Motorway service area ask the police what they think about HGVs doing this 56 MPH! they do not like it because of the build up of one HGV passing another & taking about 2 miles to pass it. I can understand people stopping in the middle although I used to curse them myself, I often go from Lancs to N.Wales, as usual the M6 is chock a block up to thelwall so I often travel in the outside lane, Yes, It is an offence to hog the middle lane It is also an offence to Intimidate a driver of a car that is in that lane but you cannot report everyone as you would never get to your destination, the people to blame for unknown Motorway Rules are the people that give you driving lessons, there should be an exam on Motorway Rules, an Exam shown on screen what rules have been broken by the motorist on the film. Motorways are the safest roads in the country, there are no right turns, no lay bys, No roundabouts, Up to a point no traffic lights, so why are there so many accidents? Its people that do not know how to use them, Speed, Tired, Com-placement, Inexperience, & the most important & always happens, travelling to close, have got to see the accident on the opposite site BANG BANG right up the ars of someone else, yes this can be stooped, for a person to run up someone else's Ars on a motorway they are driving without DUE CARE AND ATTENSION. these are the people that should be off the road with a 6 months ban it's as simple as that.
i agree with geezer...i dont see that staying in the middle is stopping anyone else getting where they need to be or really makes any diffrence to anyone else as long as they are travelling at an appropriate speed...it seems to me that a lot of people just get uppity about other people not 'following the rules' or 'towing the line; rather than it being an actual problem for them personally.
id say safety would be my major concern, not the minor irritation of a car behind me...

Oi, Dodger666, I drive a BMW and I'm a very nice man! :o)
And as for you, joko........one of my main bugbears is people who stick in the middle lane when the inside (left) lane is clear enough for them to pull over into. To make that "crime" worse, they travel at a ridiculously slow speed, which results in the people in the left lane catching them up and undertaking them! And whilst that undertaking is going on, people in the middle lane (who are being held up by Johnny/Jenny Slow Nuts!) overtake in the outside lane.
I even saw one woman this morning (and I am in no way a sexist pig) move from the lefthand lane to the middle lane when there was nothing in front of her!

It depends what is weaving and what is not doesn't it.
I've heard advice from the Police that you should move in if you're not going to be overtaking in the next 10-20 seconds or so.
Why is middle lane cruising causing congestion Geezer? because of the volume of traffic that can be accomodated on the motorway at any time.
When people don't move in they are effectively taking up two lanes reducing a 3 lane motorway to 2 - obviously that is not an issue at 3 am but at busier times it reduces the capacity of the road and leads to bunching and people driving too close to each other.
