Glad you twigged 7d, my post was certainly not a hint! I am but a mere mortal! As far as £/$ ratio, your daughter had better get over here pronto! Our last venture to the US about 2 years ago, gave us 2$ to the £1, now it is 1.62$ to £1.00, who knows what will happen in Spring, and then after our General Election. Perhaps you should use some of your "discipline expertise" in currency speculation!! For sure it will not be an inexpensive sojourn for her here in the UK, but certainly a culture change!
Devadolly, you'll defeat Mr O this week, then every time in the future! How goes the property dealings Christiana?

I'm recoiling in horror at the thought of the poor old pound weakening against the dollar, especially as I have tied myself in to a pound/euro deal for when I sell my house here, in the belief that the pound will strengthen. To answer your question Doc H H, I am currently negotiating for a bungalow in a village called East Keal in Lincolnshire. Offer accepted but busy wading through HIPS, surveys etc., before actually signing anything. I'm using most of my savings, coupled with the money from the sale of our apartment, so it's a real stretch, but who knows how long it will be before the house sells. So it's another gamble, this time on house prices rising in the near future.
Dr b, thanks for the 'basket' hint. Like you with another clue, light almost immediately dawned and I could have kicked myself for not immediately recognising the salt in question. Am only now returning to the fray, but it's almost complete.

Please let the pound stay strong for a bit - visiting students notwithstanding! Although I have almost entirely finished filling in the grid to my satisfaction, I am definitely missing something in 6 down - and the thematic word in that same column. I have checked all the answers around and cannot see my error. I believe the thematic word should be of three letters long. Any hintlets gratefully received!
Sorry to be so late checking in, but we were at a 21st party on Sunday,so didn't even have a chance to look @ EV until yesterday. Then it took me such a long time to get 7D, which was needed for a synonym I've never heard before....strange because I thought I knew all the euphemisms for this theme. Doc, glad you had a good holiday. How did your significant birthday go?, or has the memory been obliterated by too many b!oody Marys?. May be late again next week as we're off to London again for a few days.
Hello Copelander,
Significant b/day went well. Birthday Cakes and vouchers for dinner in the a la carte restaurant, plus a room up-grade, from the booked garden view, to one with a view across a man-made lagoon, then across beach and Red Sea to Saudi Arabia! Stunning views by day and by night quite spectacular!
Have submitted my bus-pass application, had my residential address and agedness approved and am waiting for it to drop onto my door-mat any day now!!
I guess I also now get free prescriptions and eye tests! Such are the benefits of growing old!
Actually, I think I have rediscovered B/Ms and prefer them to G&Ts!
Have a good time in the metropolis, don't forget Maggie Jones, try it if you can!

Copelander,
I am absolutely delighted to get a bus pass!! For certain I'll be using it frequently! Spotted in the Telegraph today that there is a plan in the PBR to phase in that to be on a par with Retirement Age Pension of 65! Unfortunately my birthday fell too late in the year for me to qualify this year for the "winter fuel allowance", and it looks as if it might become "means testsed" and I'l lose out on that!
Letter in the Telegraph today said that althoungh it might be true that Pinkstinks, can we get rid of Brown first!!
