what is/was the name given to families that only got rich because they got lucky in the industrial revolution? My mum and I were trying to remember and even though its trivial, its annoying us. But I can't rmember if its just a name given to them by aristocracy at the time or in the future or both.

Nouveau riche?
Question Author
It might be but i'm sure there was a different, english slang word.

Does that translate as newly rich. My french is quite bad but i can read it quite well.
That's it, newly rich.
There's also Parvenu. A newcomer to a social class. Their money would bring them there. And then there's 'Counter jumper' someone who has progressed from selling at one side of the counter in a shop to being a customer at the other side.

Parvenu i think thats it. Thanks. Isn't it odd how poeple like myslef can read french quite well, but i struggle to put sentences together
True. I can read Spanish..well, a little, but I'd struggle to speak more than a few words.
