scrip = a bag or wallet carried by wayfarers (defn 2 here http://bit.ly/7Fu6Xk )

whole of the play = script
too small means remove the last letter (that's the only iffy part)

Thinking about it, it's not iffy at all, it just means that scrip is a smaller word than script.
