Mobile phone signal boosters

I have seen these for sale and was wondering whether anyone had used them and if they are any good?
They are metal strips that go inside the back of the phone, beside the battery.

Also, are they suitable for iphones?

If you could safely and genuinely boost the signal by sticking a metal strip inside, don't you think the manufacturers would have already done it?
