I suggest contacting your local met office station who should be able to help even if it's not one of theirs

Thank you rekstout, but have tried that and they cannot help. Wombat
If the number is long, unwieldy and punctuated -- something like 123/75757-86/939 -- try entering it into a search engine like Google. If the sequence is unique you might find a website that lists it? (Far-fetched, I know, but I can't think of anything else apart from the Met Office!)
