a virtual desktop 'safe'...is there such a thing?

i have just a few documents on my laptop that i'd like to keep hidden... and i would like a sort of box on my desk top screen that i can just drag and drop items into it, but it is passworded and only i can view the stuff in there... is there any way i can do this?
is there some software i can download thats does this?
or is there a way i can make a folder which is passworded?

The document was passworded so I only had to remember the one password. It is a few years since I left work so I can't fully remember how to fix the password but from memory it was 'save as' then at the bottom of the box I think there was a button with 'options' then a tick box to password the document. You had to type your password and again to verify it.
How about TrueCrypt ? Not exactly a box, but it creates a container file which you mount as a virtual disk. You can find out about it at http://www.truecrypt.org/
Or you could download OpenOffice http://www.openoffice.org/
It is a completely free open standard alternative to Microsoft Office, and includes a Word-esque program called Writer. If you know how to use Word, then you know how to use Writer. You can create a document, save it on your desktop and password protect it from within the "Save As" option, just as you can with Word.
You kill two birds with one stone then. You get a password protected document and a decent office productivity package all in one.
