can you hear the motor spinning?

If so the belt has broken or come off. (though it's fairly rare for a belt to come off or break unless another, more serious, problem has caused it, has it been very noisy lately?)

if you can't hear the motor turning then good chance it will be the brushes in the motor, they are about £15 a set and 20min to fit.if it's not the brushes then good chance it will be something expensive!!

yep can hear the motor, it made a bit of a bang the other day and tripped the fuse?
can you spin the drum inside by hand, and does it feel like it spins smoothly?

you really need to pull it out and take the back off and look at the belt as well.
Question Author
belt still intact and am able to spin it easily by hand.
careful not to wear your keyboard out with the long answers!

OK, So the motor is spinning, the belt is still intact and you can spin the drum easily by hand?

with the back off so you can see the motor belt and big pulley wheel put the macine onto a spin cycle and what happens?
We have hotpoint and had this problem. Read answer on internet and it worked. It stated place a couple of towels in for wash and wash again. We did and it worked. It turned out there is a safety cut out if the drum gets unbalanced (we had just washed something v.heavy) This was re-balanced the drum and touch wood had no probs since. Good luck. Worth a try before getting a repair man.
