why pick on supermarkets? How about furniture stores etc who start their sales at 9AM on Boxing Day or are you OK with that?
Having to work on days you would rather be at home is part and parcel of being a working adult.
The way people are shopping around this neck of the woods, you'd think the shops were closing for a month!!! Madness

working normal days and having to work days such as christmas are totally different

when i was working on a checkout in asda once a couple bought nearly £200 worth of food and then told me they didnt know why they had spent so much as they were going away for christmas!
Boxing Day this year is just a normal Saturday,it is not even a Bank Holiday.

why what?
So your angry at the supermarkets greed and now you also upset for the nasty slavedriver bosses for making their employees work against their will? Are the employees just given bread and water, have to work 24 hour shifts and are constantly whipped as they work to increase productivity? You learn something new here every day BY JINGO!
I go to the supermarket everyday for what I need, and so everywhere being closed on Friday is inconvenient.

And down here in Dorset only the local Tesco Express is open on Saturday not their larger supermarket a bit further away.
My local Tesco Superstore has been opening on Boxing Day for a few years. I was employed by them, and was told I would have to work on that day or be disciplined. Unfortunately for them I came into possession of Tesco's Christmas arrangements for staff. The management had told us nothing about the fact that the work was voluntary ! So I refused ...... they were going to discipline me ...... until I produced the evidence. I told them if they took any action against me I would walk out and sue them for unfair dismissal ....... needless to say they took no action ! lol

sarcasm as well! i didnt say i was angry i said i didnt think it was very good. some services have to work, but no real need for stores
ther may be a recession but the way people are shopping they're preparing for a seige so they dont need the supermarkets to open on boxing day, some of the shoppers could last out till easter. As for the supermarkets needing the extra money because of the recession,Tesco were clearing 1 billion pounds per week in April and for the first time made 3 billion profit, how much extra do they need ?
I worked at an airport so every day was the same but I don't think stores should be open
on Christmas day or Boxing Day , and a lot of the local small shops open for a few hours
for essential stuff .

I've now got an enforced lay off till 5th January. I would far rather work so will be helping a friend with her boarding kennels. My local mini supermarket is open on Christmas day morning. I expect I shall call in for a Birds Eye frozen turkey dinner. Unless I just stick with the jam sandwiches, as usual.
