governor = father (slang) = pa

thus a grip pa

I was looking at "aga" as governor, as in Aga Khan.

However, I do see command as grip.

I don't normally get stuck on Times crosswords. But when I get an answer that I cannot explain, it infuriates me that there is invariably no explanation! Perhaps the compiler expects all to know all!

You're welcome - usually I get the Times a few days each week but not today, and trying to do the clues in isolation feels a touch harder than doing them as part of filling in the grid.
