The Police

May I just take this opportunity to say what a fantastic job the Police have done since last Thursday. Firstly their handling of the whole situation immediately after the bombings. Secondly, spare a thought for the poor b*ggers working 120ft underground in 60 degree heat trying to piece together the victims. And thirdly, how rapidly they managed to determine who the terrorists were.

These unsung hero's take far too much stick, and it's about time (especially when the moral of the force has been at an all time low in recent years) that the general public gave thanks for a Force which must be the envy of the rest of the world.

Don't feel so good about Intelligence Services though. Any young man going for an 'extended spell' in Afghanistan should be monitored in the UK.

Yes, instead of getting the bodies straight out they have insisted on doing the meticulous job of getting the forensic work done before they destroy the evidence.  In contrast, in Madrid there was no knowledge at at all of the rest of the gang.  When the Madrid bombers killed themselves, there were no leads to the rest of the gang and the leaders.

Just to put 60 degrees into context for us oldies, they are doing hard physical work in a space six inches wider than an underground train in a temperature that we still call 140.

MargeB's suggestion is an interesting one but there are problems.  I am visiting a Middle East country in a few weeks, as are thousands of others.  The manpower required to track us all would be considerable, and I am not sure that we want these people to bully us into living in that sort of society.  And nobody knew of any reason to monitor these few.

Yes, here, here! I was thinking last night what a good job they've been doing throughout. All calm and collected. No panic or rush arrests. Nor are they doing nothing. I'm pretty sure some nasty people have been taken aside and given a quick bullet to the head too.

My brother is a policeman and he has been doing a brilliant job - working 18 hour days..  I think they are great!

Must be great to be in a position to do something direct.

Not sure that many young Muslim men go for two month 'holidays' to Afghanistan. Should be fairly easy to keep an eye on.

I agree with you BDW. I am always so proud of the British police force working so quickly. Just 5 days later and they had all those leads, then today 7 days later the leads are more than leads. Bravo!

All our emergency services should be applauded. I fear they will not receive the recognision they deserve but I for one, believe they are not paid their worth

I think the police do a wonderful job.They all do,fireman ,paramedics,ambulance drivers etc.My brother was a policeman for thirty years and they really do have to deal with a lot of unpleasant things.They have proved their worth with these bombings.

As someone watching all this from across the Irish sea It is very impressive how your emergency services and police force have performed over the last week. Also the army in Iraq - whether we agree with the war or not - they seem to me to be very professional in their handling of situations much more so than other armies.  I say well done for the professionalism to all

I agree also. The police and other emergency services have been excellent, as always. However, what about the station staff at the tube stations involved (especially Kings cross/Russel square). They were apparently the first on the scene saving lives. They had no training, other than their normal evacuation procedures. They also had no way of knowing if their was chemicals involved before going down there. They went into an unknown situation and done what they could before the emergency services turned up!

magicbeatle, I wholeheartedly agree. Those who worked or were simply nearby and helped deserve merit beyond the highest order. I never have and hope never will, experience such inhumane attrocities. I can only pray I would react in a similar way to these heros.
