Wash your hair, put loads of conditioner on ,comb it through.
Wrap your hair in cling film.Go and read a book or something for half an hour then rinse it all off.
Your hair should be shiny and tangle free.

When I wore my thick hair very long I always rinsed it in cold water, and it shone, never had any trouble with knots, though I guess that I would brush it when it was wet and yes I would tug at the tangles. Probably not good advice these days but worksed for me for years. I also let it dry naturally
Shaneystar's advice is good. I have long, thick, wavy hair which is also chemically treated and I very rarely brush it, but wash it every 2 or 3 days and comb it through with a wide toothed comb (you can get them at Boots), working through the tangles with your fingers first if needs be. Most of the time I use a leave-in conditioner (look for one that's a creamy consistency rather than a water-like spray - Paul Mitchell The Conditioner is great although not cheap), followed by a serum and then Frizz-Ease Secret Agent cream where needed, but once a week I use an intensive conditioner (again, look for a thick consistency, not a thin drippy one) and leave it on for half an hour as Shaneystar describes. Netibiza is also right in that heat is bad for your hair, so allowing it to dry naturally when you can and going easy on heated appliances is a good idea. Another good tip is to sleep with your hair in a satin scarf or buy a satin pillowcase. May I add that Andy008 has obviously never tried his own tip, nor seen There's Something About Mary, or he would know better.
