where does the movie term genre originate from, and what is its full definition?

Why don't you look in a dictionary. Genre is not a "movie term". It is a french word meaning type or kind.
And further to RCP's answer, it's not restricted to movies, but applies to literature, art and so on.
immediate derivation is indeed French but ultimate derivation is latin 'genus' meaning type, kind, class, sort
