Schools off....

OK, I'm old, but in my day schools were NEVER shut by snow. What do you think?

BTW I have no vested interest (no kids) but it does pee me off to see the rugrats making what is already bad even worse by sliding etc, and getting snowballed when I'm on delivery.

Our schools were and are regularly shut by snow but thats cos we are snowed in :)

The boiler room at my school was in the only room under the building itself. It was only when the heating system was compromised that my school was shut...........not that often, actually.

It annoys me beyond belief seeing them slide on pavements. I was told never to do it, and passed that onto my own children. You can imagine their mate's reaction when I yelled at a bunch of 16-17 years olds for sliding doown my path.

awwww Postie, let the kids play in the snow and enjoy their snowballs tussles. I'm an adult and still love playing in the snow and with the snow.

We arent snowed in - we are very icy though. The dept of education today announced that schools will be closed till next thursday. I just thank god I have nobody in an exam year

Im in Dublin Sherrardk and we dont tend to get the weather as bad as in the UK. But we are certainly not prepared for it. I think its ridiculous that the schools are closed that long !

Mine went in on Tuesday and they shut the school at 10.30 - the school was open today but I kept them home as I couldn't risk more snow and not being able to get them home (it's a bit rural around here and I don't think my car would get me down the lane). It's odd that they are shuting your schools for so long - how do they know the weather is going to be bad enough to warrant it?

Back when i was at school, i distinctly remember the school deciding to send the kids home early due to the snow, it was 6 feet deep in places and drifting higher, it was 1962 and my dad had taken us in in the Land Rover, but there were only a handful of kids turned up at all.

I think schools did not close so much in the "old" days because the teachers all used to live locally in towns and villages and not so many of them had cars. They could walk to school just like the pupils. Now almost everyone has cars so teachers and other staff can live miles away from their work, hence when we get a decent amount of snow, they have trouble getting to work.

I taught for 16 years and lived as far away from the school as possible - when it snowed and the school was shut I was probably more pleased than the kids
