premium rate internet sites
6 Answers
How do I know whether a site I visit is charging a premium rate. Is it just porn sites who do this or could I be 'stung' if i visit a non adult site. Do the sites have to show the cost per minute like telephone chat lines etc.and how can I block premium rate sites being acessed?

It's not the site that's premium rate it's the number your dialler dials. Your ISP will tell you what numbers to dial from where to get whatever deal you've signed up to. Some sites, usually porn but not exclusively will disconnect your line and then dial there own premium rate line and your bill goes through the roof. The best way to stop this is to get broad band as the dialler then becomes superfluous. Other than that there is probably a setting in the dialler so you can limit what numbers can be dialled. Perhaps someone else has experience of this.

This piece of software from BT, available here;

stops your modem dialling out to premium rate numbers. And is probably/ definitely worth downloading.
I say 'probably', because as Loosehead says broadband really is the way forward. It offers an infinitely superior internet experience, and is immune from malicious programs hijacking your dial up connection and connecting to premium rate numbers.
