I've had it on DVD since Christmas, yet still have'nt got round to seeing it, whilst I consider myself a pretentious film snob, am I missing something rather special?

Be warned Andy - This is a movie that once watched is never forgotten - guaranteed!

It will leave you emotionally drained. Be prepared!!

I wasn't when I first saw it and it upset me for weeks after (no kidding).

All I would say is,although you might think it is slow to start,it sets the scene for a film that although very hard to watch at times, will be one that you will watch again and again. No self respecting film buff ignores The Deer Hunter!

Totally agree with King and Linda, I have watched this film about 4 times, and I love it to bits. As Linda said you will watch it again and again. I still cry when I watch it as some of the scenes are so harrowing.

Andy, let us know what you think of it.

Agreed. I first watched it when I was about 10 and it suddenly clicked that Vietnam was a war that had happened in my lifetime and, like most Nam films, it isnt all the glory that I was used to from watching the Second World War films that I loved as a kid. Very harrowing and very moving. Memorable soundtrack as well, if I remember rightly.

I actually envy you not having seen this film , you are in for a treat. Very harrowing yes, but lindapinda is right you'll watch it more than once.Superb acting from all the main actors , but as Kingkonk says be prepared and have tissues ready.Music is good too.

I sat in the cinema and cried like a girl at the end - you will see why when you watch the film. War is not about 'heros' and 'great deeds' - it's about ordinary people, on both sides, who have their lives shattered by circumstances which they cannot control, and simply have to try and live with. The strong survive - in a way.
can only agree with all of the above.  A really excellent film in every respect and it does stay with you.
well andy have you watched it yet. .. it is fantastico ... very moving and love the .. its just too good too be true , cant take my eyes off you song. at the wedding.
