I'm using audacity as the record medium while transferring vinyl records to my PC. All is working ok but how do you prevent (or remove) hiss and crackle from the finished file?
I can't find anything about it in the manual for the record player or in the audacity help files.

I don't use Audacity but most sound editor programs have filters you can apply to reduce such noise.
But be very careful when using Audacity to remove noise. Set it to a fairly low level - better a few pops and crackles than the horrible "phasing" sound that you get throughout the recording if you apply noise removal too severely.
