I have extolled the virtues of the humble Spam Fritter a number of times on this site yet it is clearly evident that the majority of users hate them with a passion.

Consisting of nothing more than ham and pork with a little sugar, salt, water, potato starch and a hint of sodium nitrate to help keep the colour, before being encased in crispy batter, why are they so frowned upon?

Admittedly the chippy ones need to be 'degreased' before consumption but once this has been done, serve with chips and mushy peas, a squirt of Ketchup and Voila!

Is it a Class thing? A North/South thing? A pleb thing?

And why is it the Saveloy does not receive the same level of hatred? Just look at it:

spam fritters are way too greasy, although I used to enjoy them when I was at school, these days though I would need to buy a box of rennies with them
During the 39 - 45 war when I was a teenager Spam was the only ham we could buy and cooked as a fritter it was wonderful.
How could anyone think that saveloys are not hated?

Why, instead of freshly batteres fish, would anyone buy something which ...

... looks like a trouser snake, and (as Fluffy points out) also "bursts in your mouth"
