MAGISTRATES COURT
Does anyone know if Mags Court has the power to award compensation. TV Licencing are taking me to court after hounding me for six years. I have had a licence all that time, and I have kept them plus the licence for the date they are taking me to court for. I would like to know if at the end of my statement I can ask the court to award compensation for them hounding me for six years, postage, phone calls, time in court, time spent on the doorstep with their inspectors, and general aggravation

However, providing you have all the above evidence, a magistrate may award you some compensation but this is rather unlikley. I would advise you seek either, a)legal aid/advice from a solicitor or b)goto your local citzens advice.

Thankyou for your help, yes it was helpful. I definitely have a licence, and have kept the last 9 years worth. Every time I phone after I have had a visit they confirm I do, then the next letter arrives. I even received one AFTER the summons! I even pay online, so how can they have no record of me?. Anyway, years later i have finally had enough so into battle I go
all you have to do is go to court get aquitted and then use all the docs etc to launch a suit against the TV licensing authourities. Any decen brief will take that on, you'll get costs too.
I remember a family back in the 80's who where hounded by the TV licence mod and they didn'y have a TV and preferred to live without one. No one would belive them, in the end they where awarded £30k for harrasment etc.
