This clue is incomplete! The original (in the Guardian) had the word "Paper" as the first one, so the full clue starts - Paper unashamedly.....
The solution is an anagram of unashamedly into. Have a go with this info and finish up being somewhat amused!!

It is the 2nd time in four weeks that his checker has let him down.

Thanks jstjohn and kayakamina! I though it was probably an anagram but, not being a fan of the Mail on Sunday (or any other day for that mattter), I didn't spot that particular option!
