Low energy light bulbs

I replaced my lounge lights a few months ago with low energy bulbs. I have 2 light fittings and used to have 3 x 60 W in each. Both are controlled by a 2 way switch - one switch is a dimmer.
I put 6 x W8 and 11W low energy bulbs in their place. Initially everything was OK although they obviuosly didn't dim. Recently the light have started flickering and a total of 3 bulbs have gone. Have replaced one and currently have 4 bulbs working OK.
Can anyone tell me why they should be doing this please? Thanks

They should not be used with a dimmer switch is all I know.

Thanks. I had heard they don't mix with dimmers but I don't see why they shouldn't if the dimmer is left on full. Have thought of replacing the dimmer but had thought that would be overkill.
Any physicists / theoretical electricians out there to explain please?

You can actually buy dimmable LE bulbs but they usually come in a set with a dimmer switch. I guess it's either a way to make you buy another dimmer or there's something special about the way it works. Look in the usual places - B&Q or Homebase.

you can buy dimmable low energy bulbs or a dimmer that will dim the ordinary ones, but look to pay £20 to £30 for one of these.
Normal dimmer switches work by varying the frequency to the bulb, not the voltage, so confuse fluorescent bulbs.
