That was in 1977 in Tenerife - 2 747 s collided on a foggy runway - they were Pan Am and KLM

KLM has had crashes over the years,try a google search in fact they were involved in the worst disaster you refer to.
1. March 27, 1977. Two Boeing 747s, operated by KLM and Pan Am, collide on a foggy runway at Tenerife, in Spain's Canary Islands killing 583 people. The KLM jet departed without permission and struck the Pan Am jet as it taxied along the same runway. Confusion over instructions and a blockage of radio transmissions contributed to the crash.

Isn't Quantas the only airline not to have had a major crash - or am I believing all that I see on the telly (ie Rainman!!)

No, Qantas Airlines is the only airline company in the world to have never been involved in an air disaster (crash). The only other airline that could boast about the same credentials was the Concords, but that quickly changed after the terrible disaster in France. The Australian airline company Qantas is still considered the safest 747 airliners in the world.

 

It's funny you mentioned Rainman. It's probably one of the few examples of movies being accurate.

Qantas 'crashed' in Bangkok just before the Sydney Olympics, and broke the nose wheel off on a golf bunker ( four holes on the RTAF course are between the two runways at Don Muang).  The 747 was patched up and flown again, where it is rumoured a wing flap fell off.  In any case, the plane was retired and Qantas are without a crash as it only counts if there is a fatality or a write off.  There are some pretty good stories about that night but not on AB!

It is often claimed, most notably in the movie Rain Man, that Qantas has never had a fatal crash. However, the company's official line is that it has never lost a jet aircraft. Prior to the jet era, Qantas had fatal crashes. One was on July 16, 1951, when a Qantas deHavilland Drover crashed in New Guinea after an engine failure, killing all 7 passengers and crew. Other fatal accidents occurred in 1927, 1934, 1942, 1943 (2), and 1944. Qantas' record in the jet era was spotless until a Qantas plane crash-landed in Bangkok in 1999.  There were no fatalities.

Notwithstanding the above, KLM have had three minor accidents since 1990, although a KLM Cityhopper (a seperate branch of KLM) crashed in 1994 killing 1 crew and 2 passengers out of 24 people on board.

As an aside to the answer posted by Eternity, it's an unwanted statistic that Concorde was the most dangerous passenger aircraft ever built when you compare fatalities against total flights and distances flown.
The safest, in spite of being involved in many, many fatal accidents is the Boeing 737.

Nevertheless as Jeremy Clarkson said...the aviation industry has taken a giant step backwards since supersonic passenger transport was abandoned.
