I am wanting to go away for a beach holiday in europe at the end of August/beginning of September, but i don't really want to pay loads by going through a travel agency. Can anyone recommend a good website where people advertise their own accomodation in Spain/Greece/Cyprus/Portugal/Italy/etc as i dont mind renting privately and organising my own flights.

I wouldn't rule out using a travel agent! I worked for a small travel agents a few years ago, and as long as your agent 'works' for you, it can work out loads cheaper than independant travelling (flight discounts on bulk chartering, airport transfers, late availability deals, free insurance etc.) Would be a bit wary of the high st agents though, especially those tied to tour operators.
I have been doing this two or three times a year to Greece and Italy and have yet to have a bad experience. googling the country, area with rooms brings up loads of sites. Just choose those that look good. I have found the Italian Tourism site http://www.enit.it/default.asp?Lang=UK very useful. Most of the Greek Islands can be googled. I have been to most of them and have never been disappointed. Good luck in your search and have a good holiday.
Travel agents are actually rather good if you know how to deal with them. One place I found was a great place for a holiday is the Norfolk coast in a holiday
village. It was great fun for the family and the main thing was that the kids were entertained. Media URL: http://www.richardsonsholidayvillages.co.uk/
