Sorry but for some reason couldn't post an answer on your question. The matter of the wire, razor and scalpel was poorly explained, but I think it's because they were the weapons which were used for the murder of the real targets. Mandy was garroted with cheese wire, Welby's lover had his throat cut with a razor and Bannerman's wife was stabbed with a scalpel. A bit pointless really and had no obvious bearing on the crimes, or the solving of them. Also I think there was no similar item for Warren's son Sam.

The intended murder weapon for Warren's son was a small pair of scissors. Athough the programme was entertaining I did find it all a bit confusing and poorly thought out. The 'innocent man convicted' theme didn't really hold up when it came to the judge. I mean, he wasn't innocent was he? He lied to the police about what really happened and he knew who the real killer was anyway so he didn't have to spend 15 years in prison if he didn't want to. Also I doubt a person would have been convicted for killing a blackmailer with his own knife anyway, but that's a pipe of a different colour!

Thanks Boognish I had forgotten about the scissors. I agree in principle with all your comments about the show however I suppose that the police fabricating evidence was perhaps the real theme. I also object to the intrusion of music over the dialogue. It's bad enough for "normal" actors, but when you have Ken Stott mumbling incoherently at the best of times it can be very difficult to make out when the music is so loud. I videoed the show so was able to replay the bits which were inaudible, and there was still a line I never did make out. Very watchable stuff despite all this!

I also found the music very intrusive at times but that might have been because it was (shudder) opera. :o)
