So you meet someone you know or have'nt seen for a time, and they say , ( are you alright ), now are they really interested in your well being or do they just say that to start the conversation off, if the dog has just got run over, someone just smashed the back of your car in, someone helped themselfs to some money from your account, the cat sicked all over your quilt cover, the wife left you new year,you just lost your job, and you've got just £20 to do the shopping with, and this idiot has just asked you this as you walk in the super market, so do you say, (yes i,m fine thanks how are you.)

I think it's just another way of saying 'how are you' or 'what's happening old chum' or 'how you doing'.

Out of curiosity, did all those mishaps you mentioned above, did they happen to you? I hope not.
