Overhanging tree

The house at the bottom of my garden has a huge tree (don't know what kind) and it overhangs/shadows my garden a long way. The lowest branches are too high for me to lop myself. Who is responsible to cutting it back on my side. Do I have to pay for a tree surgeon or should the owner take responsibility? I don't know the people who live there

Sorry, edit window problem again.

I don't know the rules but I've experienced the practicalities. I have a cherry tree, bad news, all those suckers. I regularly get someone round to prune it, and he crosses into next door to do their side of the tree. They are very very lazy with their garden. I had my cherry done 2 months ago and at the same time got the team to do a couple of my neighbours' trees. They are on my south border and were blocking out the sun from 3pm onwards. I got permission of course, it cost me an extra �60 but I get sunshine now, the only practical solution I could find. (The neighbour has never offered so much as a fiver)

great link, thanks very much. I'd quite happily chip in towards the cost but don't think its particularly fair to have to foot the whole bill, it isn't my tree after all.
