Can you find out if a person has died?

Can a search be made of the Register to find out if someone has died? I wouldn't want a copy of the Death Certificate. This is for my husband who was adopted. We found his mother in the mid 80's, met her and his natural sisters but then she stopped all contact with us with no explanation.
As about 15 years have passed I think he would just like to know if she has died. Thanks.
