Re-entering VW Golf Radio Code??

I have the code but cant seem to get the numbers to save.... I keep pressing dthe ASL button but it then goes back into safe mode - any ideas?

My son did this with his ford Fiesta and he told me that _ _ _ _ came up, he put the numbers in but as soon as he pressed number 5, the radio went off, I managed to programme the code in my wife's car so am at a loss as to why my son's radio goes blank whenever he puts the code in. I am assuming that this is what is happening to Crazychicks as the code is being saved and the phone is going blank, but I may be wrong.
