Kayaking the channel for charity

I have a goal to kayak the channel this year, I have my own 'sit on top' kayak that I will use and am aware that I will need a support boat and have been in contact with the coast guards to find out I have to do legally. I would be really grateful to hear from people who have already done this, any advise on the subject, training programme etc. Most of my friends think I am mad and think it is all talk, I have never been more set in doing something so please help me prove them wrong!!!
