But babies? Most animals lay eggs rather than have live babies, but of course the eggs hatch into some kind of baby.
It's not just mammals which bear live babies -- others which do it include greenfly, some reptiles, some flies, some sharks, and some other fish, such as guppies.
In a few groups of animals, not all individuals are fertile -- for example, termites, and social wasps, ants and bees. In these only a few "queen" females (usually one in each nest) are fertile and lay eggs, while most of the other females are infertile "workers" which don't normally lay eggs.
