They receive oxygen from the mother's blood across the placenta which diffuses into their own blood supply...........

No, the lungs are full of liquid, so nothing can go down.

They swallow the amniotic fluid (which accounts for the regular bouts of hiccoughs) but they do not need their lungs to breathe as their oxygen requirements are fulfilled via the mother.
