I remember one of my typists told me how to do it and I wrote the instructions - she was the only typist to know cos it was a bit complex and she never told anybody else.
Surely if you are typing text which is underlined on a computer you should just carry on typing using the Space bar, then you will get a continuous space which is underlined.???
Alternatively, use the ____ key next to the figure 0 on your computer.
Or have I misunderstood the question?
As you haven't said which software you're using, I'll guess at MS Word.
If you want a line that goes across the whole page, place the cursor at the start of a blank line and then use the border tool to select "bottom border" and this will put a line right across from margin to margin, which you can then type your footnotes underneath.
thanks for both your answers but no it is not what I am looking for - as I said it is complex.
Without making it long story - when you insert the footnote in the text - then it comes up at the bottom of the page - I remember vaguely that you have to do something with the line and it is not straightforward typing underscore across.
thanks but in this case you should not use drawing tool cos if you know this complex knowledge the line elongates without you having to draw it. I am typing up a book and of course a lot of footnotes so there is a small line jutting out at the bottom but curiosity was killing the cat. Thanks for your answers once again. I
1 Would you please confirm that it is MS Word that you are talking about?
2 Take a screenshot or photo (if you only have printed examples) of what you are after, upload it to Photobucket or somewhere similar, and then post a link to that pic here so that the rest of us can see exactly what you result you are after.
Well I have cracked it a bit - yes it is MSWord and the proper words was called
separator.
Except the line is short -
Anyway type text add a footnote or so two or three
Separator line comes in small length

I asked help and used their instructions - view click onto footnotes and just on top of the separator line a "pane" ie instructions come up. You ask for one which I did - tried them all and still got the short one again.
Having said what I did I highlight the separate line control c and control v 2 more times.
Still I know in the panes ie continuation one the line should elongate. Hope that helps
