Cording/corking/French knitting

Hi out there,
Does anybody remember this past time that I did in the 50's in Canada? We got an old cotton spool and banged 4 small nails into the top part where the hole was. We then, by threading wool around and over the nails with another nail or a thin crochet hook would produce a long knitted "thing" that would come through the hole.
We never knew what to make the" thing" into.
Does anybody else remember this and can add to the memory?

About 40+ years ago I remember making woollen cords for a baby's knitted pants using this method - funnily enough I tried to do it again just recently - do you think I could get it to come out right !! I tried 4 and then 5 pins in the reel, but for the life of me I couldn't figure out the sequence. Senility settling in, I think.
