Read recently that before the advent of gas lighting, when people had poor quality oil lamps, they would go to bed when the sun went down, and up when it rose, but would also get up about 1.am for an hour or so, just sit and talk or visit friends. I think it was because after a hard days work they needed to rest, but still wanted to socialise.
