Transfer windows

Please help me.

I'm writing a book about a lad whose father is a (fictional) premiership manager. I need the father to say he's away on business and that business is possibly going to be to do with looking at new players to buy. So when are the main transfer windows for clubs at that level? Or any level, for that matter?

I know it probably appears that I don't know the first thing about the sport, and actually I do know very little, but don't worry - the book isn't going to discuss the sport in any depth, other than this and the kid being named after Sir Stanley Matthews.

Thank you very much - that's very informative. Scuppers my plan a bit, mind you, because I planned on setting the book around October half term. Still, not an insurmountable problem and the bit about Steve Coppell might be a space to watch.
