I have a day off

I have the day off work today (hence me being on here for so long today). My boss just called a few minutes ago, I'm sure he called to ask me to come in to work today. It's very cold and snow is expected, and I'm all snuggled in bed.

When the phone rang I looked at the caller's ID and saw it was my job and did not answer the phone. Should I have answered and refuse going into work on my off-day or did I do the right thing by not answering the phone? I'm feeling a bit guilty.

Personally I wouldnt worry.. enjoy your day off.. in the warm... and tell them tomorrow that you missed their call as your phone was somewhere else in the house and you couldnt hear it!

If it's an official day off there is no reason why you should answer the phone to your boss. If you had got up early and gone out for the day you would not have been at home to answer it anyway.
However, if you sneaked an unofficial 'duvet day', yes you should feel guilty.

Knowing I'm needed makes me feel a tad bit guilty. I was tempted to call back and say "sorry I missed your call". But you all are right, I shouldn't feel guilty it is my official day off. Thanks you guys / gals! XXX

yes society but if you were needed and you answered it then you would have said yes
hence what is the point of a day off ,they will manage without you ,if they can't then they aren't very good x

Society; a large part of managing a business is to organise workloads according to staff levels and to plan ahead for any holidays, days off, etc, when temps may be required or 'juggling' of duties to accomplish what is required to be done.
Your boss should really be able to do this properly without resorting to calling staff in when they are enjoying their rest day(s). At the very least he/she should enquire the previous day whether staff are prepared to work it. This puts the boss as the one who should be feeling guilty, not you!

I tend to answer my phone. Saves extra hassle when I do go back and I know people rarely call me unless there's a problem... They'd probably not ask me to come in though being as I'm not known for being the most placid of people.
