According to government statistics this could save up to 2000 children per year from death or injury on British roads.
Who is affected?
Every child under the age of 12 who measures less than 135cm (4ft 5in). However, the Department for Transport recommends that children should continue using booster cushions or booster seats until they are 150cm (4ft 11in) tall.

From wendillas answer above:

Yes you can. I did in the past especially when carrying more than my own two - I couldn't fit 3 boosters in the back - not sure whether no booster in back seat or booster in front seat was safer. i also use to do it to split my two up as to me, them fighting in the back was more of a risk to me crashing the car than having one of them in the front in a car seat and with air bags.
Thankfully they are both now past the booster seat stage, but I still have to carry them for their friends!
