The length of time before a conviction becomes spent is determined by the sentence for that offence. (See the table in the link below).
However it should be noted that some types of employment are exempted from the provisions of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act. When applying to work with, or alongside, children or vulnerable adults (e.g. as a teacher, school caretaker, nurse, hospital porter or care worker) convictions are never regarded as spent and must always be declared. The same applies to jobs involving the 'administration of justice' or national security.
