non payment of old bill....
12 Answers
Advice needed here please people, yesterday I received a stroppy letter from a company I had bought something from in July 2009, asking me for payment, telling me my card had been declined, which I had cancelled in December owing to it being cloned.
I rang them and they told me that their computers had gone down after July and so many transactions hadnt gone through, mine being one of them, and they are taking money now from the people who owe them. Now they send me this snotty letter practically threatening me to pay up or else. what should I do? Should I pay or because of the lapse in time, refuse to pay. I dont want to get any bad credit, but not sure how to handle it.
TIA....

If you look back at your bank statements from July last year to December when you cancelled the card, you will be able to see if payment was sent out to them.
If not, the best thing to do, as you have the goods and have'nt paid for them yet, is to contact them and tell them you will pay the amount, in full.
If it's a large amount, they may take it on installments, bearing in mind it was them that screwed up the payment when their computers went down, but at least, they wont threaten you anymore, as the next thing they COULD do, is refer it to Bailiffs and then you will incur more costs.
Best of luck to you.

I am willing to pay for the goods as I ordered them,, and they must be paid for, I have no problem with that. I will send them a cheque this weekend. Its not a large amount and I have checked cc statements and no money went out in July or August and somehow I had missed that they hadnt taken a payment.
My objection really is, the snotty letter they sent, blaming me when its not really my fault.
Thank you for all your good advice anyway, all taken on board. have a good weekend everyone.

Hope you have a lovely weekend too, afcjan x
You could ring them and let them know you are going to send out a cheque, they will make a note on their system, and get a name of the person you spoke too, so at least you have a record that you've contacted them, in the unlikely event that the cheque gets delayed in the post. Not essential though. Just precautionary.
Some companies have no tact when sending out letters, so my suggestion is to pay them off and NEVER buy another thing from them again.
Take care, my lovely xx

I would definitely give them feedback on the tone of their correspondence. There must be quite a few people who's cards had expired during that time, as well as people like yourself who had cancelled them because they were lost or stolen, they should have taken that into account before they sent out a snotty letter.
Hello jan pet, pay the amount you owe them and enclose a copy of the snotty letter with an adage saying if this is the way you treat customers, I will make sure I will never purchase from you again and then you tell10 people and that 10 people will tell another 10 and so on, It won't do any good but it will make you feel better

I'd tell them that you emailed them last July to tell them the product was crap and could they collect it - say you have been waiting for collection ever since, and obviously it must have been because their computers had gone down that they had not bothered to collect it. Then say you are going to have to charge storage!
