PC Drives

I have to reload Windows XP due to a software problem meaning its stuck on the Windows loading page, but I want to ensure my data is saved. The operating part is on the C drive, my data is on the D drive. If I disconnect the D drive will this have any affect on reloading Windows? My data has been backed up but I rather keep it on the disc and safe in case I mess up the reload and both drives are written over. Any ideas or help appreciated. Tks

Shouldn't even be any reason to disconnect the drive, but if it makes you feel happier then by all means disconnect it, it will make no difference to the install.

Thanks CF. Out of interest when reloading Windows XP from my Master Disc created when I first bought the PC, what makes the D drive secure? Is the disc specifically loading the Windows software on the C drive? Thanks again CF for yr help and all the other postings you reply to on AB. Wish I had yr knowledge!!!

During the install process you are able to select which drive you install to, any other drives are not touched. of course this does mean it's down to you to select the correct drive (I've selected the wrong one once! OPPS)

if you disconnect the D drive obviously the danger of selecting the wrong drive is removed. but are you sure you actually have two physically separate drives in the computer, a lot of computers are supplied with one physical drive but that one drive is split into two partitions that then show as two separate drive letters in "my computer"

Good question. Just opened up the PC and have 2 x 300GB Drives. Then again I suppose that leads to the question which drive is which? :-@

disconnect one and switch the computer on

if it loads windows you've disconnected the D drive, if it says OS not found you've disconnected the C drive.

Aaaaah. Comes up with a message stating Detecting Array with an Nvidia message in red flashing, before moving onto Boot Agent, then Exiting Boot Agent. Looks like will have to keep both plugged in n hope for the best!

SOS! When placing Master CD into my Packard Bell in order to reload Windows, but not to over ride my personal data, I have a choice of amongst other things Standard System Restore or Windows and Smart Restore. Which do I pick just to reload Windows XP in order for it to work again and stop sticking at start up?
