No one answered this in 'Food', so I will try here.

Why do satsumas only appear in supermarkets for a few weeks at a time, while mandarins and the like are there for longer?

In case you didn't guess I love satsumas, but find the others difficult to peel, full of pips and generally a poor imitation.
