rover 620 diesel pump clicking

After many months of trouble free motoring my faithful tank has now decided to play up ! it now appears to tick like a time bomb from the top of the fuel pump when the ignition is on, and now wont start any help in finding out if this is a relay problem or a short anywhere would be great ! cheers guys and gals !
