xyzzyplugh's comments about Nescafe jogged my memory. The best coffee I've ever had was in Tunisia and I think the beans come from Egypt or somewhere similar. Is it available in the Uk and if so where from. One small cup was enough to kickstart my day.

Could it be what is generally known as Greek or Turkish or Arabic coffee? Made in an Ibriki it is very strong, very black, very sweet. Served in a small cup, usually with a glass of cold water, you leave a layer "sludge" in the bottom. The coffee itself is ground very fine, and is reasonably widely available. Just ask for Greek coffee. Instructions to make it can be found http://www.globalgourmet.com/destinations/greece/c
offee.html Good
luck!
