Due to various symptoms, and checking these on the Internet,it seems I now have Irritable Bowel Syndrome, this has been confirmed by my (somewhat useless) GP.
He said he doesn't know what I can do to relieve it.I get the feeling that as I am 87 he is not bothered.
He thrust several leaflets at me,and these combined with the information from the net lead me to Peppermint Tea,which has relieved the symptoms quite a bit.
What I really need is an ABe'r with personal experience of IBS to give me some hints.
Anyone out there fit the bill?
Alec.

MrV...you will be inundated with advice from sufferers, all with their "pet " treatments.

Now let's cut to the chase.......have you had a Colonoscopy?
I have IBS, removing trigger foods is the best if they are causing discomfort, everyones tolerances are different to different things so its a trial and error thing , try to relax more as well as stress will trigger symptoms.

No Sqad,
I got the feeling that because of my age my GP "couldn't be bothered"

Yes I read something similar on a website.
I think I may keep a food diary, and see what food equates with what symptoms.

Sorry Sqad,I forgot a line.
I should have added,"couldnt be bothered about any of it.It was just give me some leaflets and get rid of me."
Aged 87 yrs of age does not preclude you from the best investigation and treatment....in my opinion.

I have known 60yr olds that look and act like 80+year olds and 80 yr olds that look and act like 60 yr olds.

Do not accept that diagnosis without first seeing a Gastro-Enterologist.
Mr. V - I take Colofac tablets which contain Mebeverine Hydrochloride 200mg when my IBS flares up. These tablets relax the muscles which spasm in the stomach.

My biggest problem is the stomach cramps, and these tablets do help.

You can also buy over the counter a tablet called Colpermin which do contain oil of peppermint, they also can be helpful.

I have had IBS ever since I had my hysterectomy.

Like Sqad says - you should get a more thorough diagnosis.
whilst waiting to be diagnosed with my endometriosis, the doctor for a while thought I had IBS, the peppermint tablets mentioned above (colpermin) are supposed to be the best, according to him, my friend also takes them and she has IBS..... she says they work a treat!
my mums neighbour who suffers from ibs takes some kind of tea ingredients given by her chinese herbalist she says they work wonders worth chatting to your local herbalist
