DVD-RW not working

Device manager says DVD-RW and DVD player both working. DVD-RW doesn't! It opens and shuts but doesn't recognise any disc. Have tried uninstalling etc but to no avail. As both players have the same drivers, does this mean I'm looking at a hardware problem rather than a software one. I'd hate to buy a new drive only to find problem still exists. Many thanks.

Vista Home Premium - sorry, I should have mentioned that. Liz
Open the case - follow anti static precautions - ensure power is off

Swap around iDE or sata cable connection to the opposite drive - if problem still happens and the DVD drive still works it's the drive - probably the laser these can be replaced but the part is around £16-£25 about as much as a new drive

Hope this helps
do the drives show if you click start > computer?

Thanks guys for all your help. Looks like the drive has had it. However, as I'm one of these people who doesn't like to throw useful stuff away, I rummaged through all my gear and found an old drive that is working great! It really does pay to hang onto stuff - within reason, of course! Liz
