Can't understand 9a? Some old people taking the plunge (6) I've got -I-E-S could be divers i suppose but i can't see relevance to clue (old people) anybody any ideas? Many thanks!

ive put divers, but the only obvious connection is plunge.don't understand the old people connection at all. perhaps someone else will enlighten us!
